Knit in the round beginning at the neck, this openwork poncho looks lovely with a dress or with jeans. The feather and fan stitch pattern makes for interesting knitting, while still being easy enough for someone new to openwork. The lace makes it dressy enough for special occasions, but it can still be worn with jeans for a casual look.  And, it's knit in sport weight yarn, so it's light enough for indoor wear.
